The Poiana Uzului dam is an anthropogenic dam, built on 80 metres high buttresses and with a water volume of 90 mil cubed, the second such dam in Europe, being put in use in 1972. This lake serves as a very good water supply for several towns (Dărmăneşti, Comăneşti, Târgu Ocna, Moineşti, Oneşti, Bacău) and several villages in Bacău county. In addition to the extraordinary landscapes from the lake area situated between the Nemira and Ciucului mountains, the dam is the favourite place for sport fishermen from Dărmăneşti, Bacău county and so on.
Flanked by the Nemira, Ciuc and Berzunţi mountains, situated at the confluence of the rivers Uz and Trotuş, Dărmăneşti turistic area comprises several tourist sights with a great development potential not yet exploited. The exceptional natural frame, with natural reservations and wilderness areas one rarely comes across in a lifetime, the unique customs and traditions, preserved religiously by the local people, among which the bear dance is, without a doubt, a treasure transmitted from generation to generation like an instrinsical heritage, the hospitality and kind-heartedness of the people offer the Uz valley exceptional tourist area qualities.
The Nemira mountains are part of the central group of the Oriental Carpathian mountains, demarketing their Southern extremity. With peaks that reach a maximum height of 1649 m (Nemira Mare peak), quite accesible to mountain lovers, the Nemira mountains hold secret beauties, unknown for the larger public. Exceptional flora, with extremely valuable species, part of the Plaiurile Natural Reservation and Nemira rocky region, caves rumoured to go deep into the heart of the Earth, with beautiful ponds that offer great views, stones sculpted by the Nemira crivetz (a cold boralike wind from the north-northeast, characteristic of Romania) that resemble The Sphinx and Babele from the Bucegi mountains, secluded paths and old myths and legends are just few of the riches with which the Nemira mountains await to charm the welcome guests of Dărmăneşti.
The Bălătău Lake is a dam lake formed in 1883, similar to The Red Lake, on the Black Creek that sprins from the Nemira peaks. It has been declared a natural monument, being part of the Nemira Mountains Natural Reservation, included in the European ecological network.
Dărmăneşti also hosts the Castle of Marina Ştirbei (also known as “the Princess of the Romanian Aviation”), which dominates the Uz Valley. The Princess, the first woman to be a military pilot, is one of Romania’s heroines, having been very involved in saving the lives of people wounded in the Second World War. Ştirbei Princess was beloved by the local people, especially by the kids, to whom, according the stories, she used to bring sweets whenever she came to the Castle, landing on an aerodrome improvised on a nearby field. The Dărmăneşti Castle, was used by the Princess and by George Ştirbei prince as a summer residence, and during the war she transformed it in a sanitarium.
